Srila Prabhupada (Biography )

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He was named Abhaya Charan.

He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati was renowned Vaishnava scholar and founder of 64 branches Gaudiya Math. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati liked him and told him to devote his life to teaching Vedic Knowledge; more specifically to preach Lord Caitanya's message to the English speaking world.
Abhaya Charan was initiated in the year 1932 by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Gosvami.

Srila Prabhupada wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita and in 1944, without assistanece, started an English fortnightly magazine.Srila Prabhupada was honored with the title " Bhaktivedanta " in the year 1947 by the Gaudiya Vaishnava Society recognizing his philosophical learning and devotion.

Later on Srila Prabhupada retired from married life and adopted vanaprastha (retired) order to devote more time to his studies and writing. He accepted the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in 1959. At Radha-Damodara, Srila Prabhupada began work on his life's masterpiece: a multivolume translation and commentary on the 18,000-verse Srimad-Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana) and also published three volumes. .
In 1965 Srila Prabhupada went to America to fulfill the mission of his spiritual master. Since that time His Divine Grace has written more than sixty volumes of authoritative translations , commentaries and summary studies of the philosophical and religious classics of India.

In 1965  he first arrived by freighter in New York City. He had had a very difficult crossing, suffering two heart attacks and once arrived in New York he didn't know which way to turn.Srila Prabhupada was practically penniless.  It was after almost a year of great difficulty that he established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in July of 1966. Within the decade ISKCON has grew to a worldwide confederation of almost one hundred asramas, schools, temples, institutes and farm communities. Srila Prabhupada
Srila Prabhupada established many  Temples, Farm Communities, Gurukuls, Govinda Restaurants, Ratha yatras and numerous festival celebrations. Along with a number of cultural festivals for our benefit. He gave  his own disciples so that people may learn and follow his instructions and thus please Krsna.
Srila Prabhupada's most significant contribution, however, is his books. His books are highly respected by the academic community for their authoritativeness, depth and clarity. They are used as standard textbooks in numerous college courses. His writings are now translated in many languages.. The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) which  was established in 1972 publishes the  the works of His Divine Grace. It has  become the world's largest publisher of books in the field of Indian religion and philosophy.
